On Sunday 7 August, Poneke hosted the annual Richard Nichols Memorial Cup tournament.  The following clubs participated in the tournament:

There were 11 boys currently playing for Wests that made their teams plus several others that have recently played for Wests.

The U8, U9 and U10 Rep trials took place at the Boyd-Wilson artificial turf on Sunday 12 June.  It was a great day and all the selectors were very impressed with the high quality of the players.  They all had a very difficult time deciding on the teams.

Calling 7-13 year olds to leave the field during RWC 2011

ANZ is giving 96 children a change to share the field with the world's best rugby players and experience the exhilaration and roar of a packed stadium during Rugby World Cup 2011 later this year.  ANZ is looking for 7-13 year old boys and girls from around the country to be ANZ Future Captains and stand shoulder to shoulder with the team captain while leading participating players onto the field at the 48 matches held around the country.

The Wellington Rugby Football Union has asked that all clubs are reminded of the Excessive Scores Policy and the Players off the Sidelines Policy.

It is now compulsory at half time if the difference in score exceeds 30 points, to declare the game won at half time and to take action to make the teams even for the second half. Teams failing to offer or accept this risk being removed from the draw.

The Wests Seniors Old Timers day is on Saturday 14 May.  Come along and support the club and watch the prems take on Wainuiomata.  That game starts at 3:00pm at the cage at Ian Galloway.

As a curtain raise, our two U13 teams will face-off at 1:30pm at the cage which should be a great game.  In addtion, a couple of U6 and U7 teams will have a run during half time of the prem game.

All coaches must attend a Small Blacks coaching course each year before the start of the season.

The course at Wests will be on Sunday 27 March at 10:00am.

New for this year, Wests are starting a Nursery Grade for 3 and 4 year olds

The inaugral Wests Roosters Fair and Recruitment Day is being held this month by the Wests Senior Club on Sunday 31 October from 9:00 – 2:00pm rain or shine!. As a club which extends a welcoming hand of friendship to all sporting codes and the wider community in the Western Suburbs and beyond, come and meet club members and players and help us raise funds for the boys.

Buy a bargain or two at over 20 Market stalls, meet rugby and sporting celebrities and hear how great it is to belong to one of Wellington's oldest and largest rugby clubs in Wellington. There'll be something to suit the whole family including lots of entertainment for the children. We're turning it on with Barista coffee, fabulous homemade baking, sweets and snacks, icecreams and the best sausage sizzle in town!

In the coming weeks, the club season will be over but only for 15s. That means our attention shifts to 7s and it is in 4 or 5 stages. The first stage is the WRFU's localpoint club series on September 11th and 18th at Porirua Park.

Following this, a squad will be selected to attend the Raraotonga 7s which take place November. On January 22nd and 23rd we also hope to attend The World's Hottest 7s in Darwin depending on results and sucess at getting funding. Then in February is the Ambassadors Cup for Wellington 7s supremacy.

We are seeking applications from both inside and outside the club for Coaches and Managers for these teams. If interested, please contact CCO Ellis Meachen on 021 2460604 or by using the contact page on the website.

Yann, who plays in our under 11 grade, is shortly to leave to go to Africa with his family. They have been posted to Benin –near Togo and Nigeria. Where they are going to is a poor area but they do play rugby. There is a French influence and of course Yann is French.

Jean-Louis (who is Yanns dad) has asked if the Wests club/ parents can spare any old rugby gear and if so he will take it all to Benin in Africa and distribute to young players/schools etc..

The Wellington City Zone Representative teams have been finalised with a total of 19 Wests players selected.  This is a great achievement and congratulations to all the players.

Good News - Training Jackets Still Available for $15

There are 13 size XS and 12 size 2XS available on a first come first served basis.

For those who have pre-ordered the jackets during the registration days you can collect them on Team Day.

Starting on Sun 14th March through to Sun 11th April at Ian Galloway Park.  This represents the formal pre-season training and is available for all U11, U12 and U13 players

Johnsonville 24 (24) - 36 (15) West

On a nice winter's day and in front of a large crowd (almost 100) the might that were the West’s and Johnsonville coaches/parents rugby teams met at Helston Park, the home of Johnsonville RFC, for what might be the first of an annual fixture. It was a very good game, played in the right spirit and included good performances all round.
